In Mumbai, engineers from the BMC road department, who were warned for not promptly addressing pothole complaints, have presented their reasoning. They explained that some roads were not under their jurisdiction, but belonged to other agencies. Additionally, they mentioned instances where project roads' contractors had not completed repair work, prompting them to engage their own contractors. The engineers also cited their busy schedule during the Prime Minister's visit to the city as a contributing factor. The BMC administration cautioned the engineers to ensure timely pothole repairs to avoid further warnings or disciplinary actions. Show-cause notices were issued to 23 road department engineers by the BMC for the delayed response to pothole complaints. The BMC had assigned 227 sub-engineers, each responsible for monitoring a 9km network. Notices were also sent to the sub-engineers questioning why action should not be taken against them for failing to address pothole issues promptly. Previously, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers' Union had appealed to the BMC chief not to undermine the morale of the staff with punitive actions. The Union highlighted that engineers work long hours, including weekends, and recommended that the BMC chief consider implementing two shifts due to increased workloads. They also suggested a meeting to address the challenges faced by the engineers. The Union mentioned ongoing Metro projects in the city and emphasized that contractors responsible for these projects must maintain roads according to the issued NOCs.
